Fur-Directory

The UAE has many rules and regulations when it comes to pet ownership and you need to familiarise yourself with these throughout your stay.  Please also bear in mind that the rules can change so look for updates and check the news and animal forums.

Pet owners are required to keep their pets on a leash at all times (you may face a fine of up to Dh100,000 if you get caught with a pet off leash!).  If your dog is on the banned list (in Dubai) you are also required to muzzle it as a precautionary measure.

With the above in mind, now you can get yourself ready to check out some of the services you may need to use, or want to visit, whilst living in the UAE.

We have now created an online directory containing listings for vets, hotels and much more.  Please click here to go straight to the directory so you can do your own search.

If you would like your business shown here please contact us with your details, including how you support your local animal community.

Vets

There are dozens of vets across the UAE and your best port of call is to do a search for a vet closest to your home.  In the case you have an emergency you won’t want to be travelling too far to get your furry friend the medical attention he or she needs.

A great way to find a good vet is through research and by referral.  When I arrived in the UAE I asked all of my networks for their preferred vet, and why they liked it.  Pet forums on Facebook can also be a great source of referral.

The costs of services can vary from vet to vet so you may also want to ask about the types of services they provide as well as costs and opening hours.

A google search will help you find one closest to your home, or otherwise you can refer to the Fur-Directory provided here as it lists those vets that are known to provide discounted services to stray and abandoned animals.  Please contact us if this list needs to be updated.

Pet hotels and pet sitters

The UAE has a great selection of pet hotels and pet sitting businesses that suit most budgets and requirements.

Ensure you only use a licensed facility or individual. There have been cases of people leaving their dogs with people they don’t know and the dog has been sold for breeding or worse. License holders will also have insurance to cover anything that happens to your pet as well as trained staff that can deal with any medical or behavioural issues, should they arise.

Please note that temporary/foster homes are for dogs that don’t have a family and are rescued, waiting to be adopted, not for accommodating your pet while you go on holiday.

Pet grooming

The UAE has a great selection of pet groomers, including some that will come to your home.   A google search will help you find one closest to your home, or for a list ready to go, click here.

Pet relocation businesses

There are many local and international pet relocation businesses.  Ensure you do the research and refer to the Fur-Travel page for some tips and advice.

Parks and exercise areas

Owners are not permitted to walk their pets off lead out in the public so it is important to have a collar and lead on your pet at all times when leaving the house.

Thankfully there are a number of spaces you can take your dog for exercise and socialising (for the dog and their human).

Dog friendly cafes and restaurants

Whilst the UAE isn’t as dog friendly as many other countries, there are some cafes and restaurants that do allow you to bring your furry friend along. The UAE doesn’t allow diners to take their furry friend inside with them but there are a few places where you can dine outside together, the Fur-Directory in the Resource Centre contains a few options noted by dog lovers in Dubai.
